AP, Therma Visayas in community health empowerment drive

AboitizPower and Therma Visayas, Inc. (TVI) recently introduced upgrades to the Brgy. Bato Health Center, a vital facility at TVI’s host community in Toledo City, Cebu.

“The upgrades and programs for Brgy. Bato Health Center are part of Project M.A.T.C.H, which stands for Magnifying Accessibility to Community Health — TVI’s long running initiative which is characterized by a holistic and accessible approach to healthcare for our host communities,” said Noel Cabahug, facility head of TVI.

As part of this most recent initiative,  the Brgy. Bato Health Center will receive essential health center equipment for its birthing area, while Barangay Health Workers (BHW) will undergo training on the most effective use of the new instruments and facilities.

In addition to the provision of training and medical equipment, Project M.A.T.C.H. will offer health information video materials. The educational videos, sourced from the Department of Health (DOH) and featuring their practice at TVI’s various community projects, will be played daily within the health center.

“The new equipment, the training programs, along with the looping videos aim to empower the community; for health workers it is about tapping the available resources, and for the residents it is about being proactive on  important health issues,” said Cabahug.

According to a co-proponent, retired public school teacher and now Kagawad Janeth Cereno, ensuring the sustainability of Project M.A.T.C.H. is a top priority.

“The Barangay Council of Bato and the Bato Barangay Health Center are working closely with TVI  to maintain a well-staffed health center. Through annual barangay planning sessions involving our partners in TVI, we will continue to discuss potential improvements and interventions that could further enhance the local government unit’s ability to provide primary healthcare,” said Cereno.

Project M.A.T.C.H. was born out of valuable insights gained by TVI and LGU partners from previous medical missions and dialogues with the community. It aims to tackle the challenges residents face in accessing basic healthcare services, such as obtaining medicines and doctor check-ups, which are often hindered by their distance from the barangay hall or city center.

TVI’s partnership with volunteer doctors and the local government highlights the project’s comprehensive approach, addressing both immediate healthcare needs and the long-term development of the community’s health infrastructure. This initiative aims to make a meaningful difference, improving the quality of life for residents by equipping them with the necessary tools and knowledge to maintain their health.

Operating a state-of-the-art power plant certified in five ISO standards– Quality Management, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Management, Asset Management, and Business Continuity Management– Therma Visayas Inc., is focused on creating a positive impact in its host communities.

Its 340-megawatt baseload power plant in Barangay Bato, Toledo City plays a primary  role in providing electricity to the region, supporting Cebu’s rapid economic growth.
