TWO Filipino graduates from Harvard and MIT, Art Abal and Anna Kazlauskas, are leading efforts to democratize data control through their blockchain startup, VANA. Their goal is to decentralize data ownership, allowing individuals to manage their digital footprint and move data across platforms without being subject to control by large tech companies. VANA leverages blockchain technology to empower users, ensuring data becomes a tool for personal and community benefit.
Art Abal, with a background in law and data governance, brings his expertise in societal impacts of AI and data rights. His experience spans working with global law firms, advising Timor-Leste’s Prime Minister, and rethinking data usage for Nespresso in Colombia.
Anna Kazlauskas, with expertise in computer science and blockchain, has pushed the boundaries of financial inclusion and AI. Her previous work at Celo and Iambiq, as well as experience in Ethereum crypto mining, strengthens VANA’s mission.
Their journey began with a project at the MIT Media Lab, where they launched TOCA, an initiative that engaged low-income communities in AI development by having them label data. Although paused during their studies, this project laid the foundation for VANA, which aims to give individuals control over their data while promoting inclusivity in AI technology.
VANA has gained global attention, including support from venture capital firms like Paradigm and Polychain. It also reflects a deep commitment to empowering Filipinos, one of the world’s largest social media user groups. The platform seeks to ensure that AI technologies better reflect local cultures and languages, allowing Filipinos to benefit from the emerging data economy.
“This is one direct way in which Filipinos can really participate in this emerging data economy,” Art stated. Their vision is to leave an enduring legacy that ensures people, not corporations, control the data that defines their digital identities. VANA’s mission highlights a movement toward ethical data sourcing, prioritizing user consent and control over data in a rapidly changing digital landscape.
