LTO urged: Address backlog in motor vehicle license plates

SEN. Francis Tolentino yesterday urged the Land Transportation Office to address the backlog of motor vehicle license plates.

This after the LTO, during a Senate committee hearing yesterday, said the agency still needs to address the backlog of motor vehicle license plates which has risen to more than 12.9 million.

“How do you address these insurmountable backlogs? What will take the LTO to upgrade its system?” Tolentino said during the deliberations of Senate Bill No. 159 seeking to amend the Motorcycle Crime Prevention Act.

LTO chief Vigor Mendoza said the agency will take two-and-a-half years to address the backlog.

Tolentino said it is best if the LTO prioritizes older motor vehicles that have yet to be issued license plates since 2014.

He said the LTO should also streamline the process of adding and changing relevant information in vehicles’ Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) System to fulfill the bill’s goal of preventing motorcycle crimes.

“It is an administrative hassle if you go to the LTO, and change the name and contents of the RFID. It is complicated but if it can be done from a central office where it will be encoded, maybe that’s better,” he said.
