THE Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) yesterday urged the Senate to ratify International Labor Organization (ILO) Convention 190 (C190), which aims to eliminate violence and harassment in the workplace, saying even overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) can benefit from its enforcement.
In a statement, DMW Officer-in-Charge Undersecretary Hans Leo Cacdac said the department views the ILO protocol as a landmark instrument that recognizes the dignity and safety of all workers.
“The Convention is especially relevant for our OFWs, who may face various forms of violence and harassment in their workplaces abroad, such as physical, psychological, sexual, or economic harm,” said Cacdac.
“Certain groups of OFWs may even be more vulnerable to violence and harassment, such as domestic workers, seafarers, health workers, and women workers,” he added.
He said the ratification of C190 will underscore how the Philippines values workplace safety.
“The ratification of the Convention will highlight the Philippines’ commitment to promoting safe and decent work for all Filipinos regardless of their country of destination,” said Cacdac.
ILO C190 has already been ratified by six countries, namely, Argentina, Ecuador, Fiji, Namibia, Somalia, and Uruguay.
