British businesses in PH present wishlist

The British Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (BCCP) yesterday laid out its wish list for doing business in the country, most of them reiteration of previous proposals.

In a press conference, BCCP executive director Chris Nelson renewed calls for the extension of the lower tariffs on imported pork through Executive Order 10  which he said has assured stability of supply in the market. The United Kingdom is a major supplier of pork to the Philippines.

Nelson said BCCP hopes to see the passage of the  Anti-Agricultural Smuggling Act to strengthen the local agriculture sector.

BCCP also vowed to continue collaborating  with various stakeholders in liberalizing trade to boost British presence in the Philippines.

“The British Chamber welcomes the Philippine government’s policy initiatives in further liberalizing trade, paving the way in making the country a major UK’s economic link in Southeast Asia- leading in innovation, research and development, sustainability, climate, and economic resilience,” Nelson said.

Nelson said BCCP sees the need to promote digitalization to improve the ease of doing business in thecountry

On the policy side, BCCP supports efficient trade regulatory practices that encourage UK-Philippines trade.

“The British Chamber looks forward to providing market opportunities while sustaining the UK-Philippines trade relations through a sustainable and efficient trade practices.

We aim to boost trade and investments in the Philippines through increased collaboration,” Nelson said.

The UK is among the top three countries with the highest approved foreign direct investments with P3.06 billion.

Bilateral trade stood at  2.9 billion pounds in 2022. – Irma Isip
