Firecracker injuries near 300

THE Department of Health (DOH) yesterday said 291 cases of firecracker-related injuries stemming from the New Year revelry have been reported.

The DOH Fireworks-Related Injury Surveillance 2022 Report No. 15 showed 14 additional injuries, raising the total to 291 as of January 5 (6 a.m.).

The number is 55 percent higher compared to that in 2022 which had 188 cases, said the DOH.

The firecrackers that caused most of the injuries were “kwitis” with 61, “boga” with 33, “5-star” with 23, and unknown fireworks with 18.

Hand injuries were the most common cases with 105 followed by eyes (80), heads (39) and legs with 37.

Of the 291 injuries, 146 involved active cases or those who actually used firecrackers.

The DOH also reported that 49 of those injured by firecrackers were intoxicated.

Also, 162 injuries occurred in the streets, while 121 others happened at home.
