WORLD Para Athletics formally informed the Philippine Paralympic Committee last week that Hangzhou Asian Para Games gold medalist Jerrold Mangliwan and wheelchair thrower Cendy Asusano have qualified for the Paris Paralympic Games.
“We received the notice from the from World Para Athletics notifying the PPC about Jerrold and Cendy qualifying for the Paris Paralympic Games early Saturday since the previous day was the deadline,” said PPC president Mike Barredo of the correspondence from the world para track body based in Bonn, Germany.
“Confirmed na si Jerrold and Cendy thru High Performance Allocation. PPC was informed by World Para Athletics thru email. Praise the Lord!” exclaimed national para coach Joel Deriada.
Seeing action in his third straight Paralympic Games, Mangliwan set a high entry time of one minutes and .0154 seconds in winning the men’s 400-meter T52 race in the Hangzhou APG while Asusano earned her ticket with her fourth-place throw of 14.23 meters in the javelin throw T54 event of the same meet.
“Now we have six athletes going to Paris,” said Barredo, referring to early qualifiers Ernie Gawilan and Angel Mae Otom of swimming, one-armed taekwondo jin Allain Ganapin and wheelchair-bound para archer Agustina Bantiloc
This the same number of representatives that made it to the Tokyo Paralympic Games in 2021, but only three actually participated — Mangliwan, Gawilan and fellow national para swimmer Gary Bejino.
