PSI raises howl over coming tryouts

PENDING the result of its appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the Philippine Swimming Inc. has questioned the authority of the World Swimming-appointed Stabilization Committee to hold national team tryouts for the 32nd Cambodia Southeast Asian Games starting Feb. 19 at the New Clark City Aquatic Center in Capas, Tarlac.

“We reiterate that the authority of the individuals appointed to the ‘Stabilization Committee’ is still currently being appealed with the CAS,” the PSI board said in a statement last week.

The Executive Bureau of the world swimming federation, which was renamed to World Swimming from its earlier French acronym FINA, had appointed the committee to oversee the day-to-day affairs of local swimming after withdrawing recognition of the PSI board in a letter dated on Dec. 3.

This led the POC to appoint POC legal chief Wharton Chan as committee head and POC deputy secretary general Bones Floro and Bases and Conversion Development Authority senior vice president Arrey Perez as its members.

After this, the WA Executive Bureau wrote a separate letter last Dec. 15 to both the POC and PSC that the PSI had been “expelled” from its membership, prompting the local swimming body to file a case with the CAS.
