Kiefer gets to play in Japan, after all

KIEFER Ravena’s fervent desire to show his wares overseas is set to become a reality.

After all the hullabaloo and a change of heart from the PBA, the NLEX star guard was finally given the green light to suit up as an Asian import for Shiga Lakestars in the Japan B.League.

“The NLEX Road Warriors are happy to announce that an agreement has been reached with the PBA to allow Kiefer to play in the Japan B. League for one season,” Road Warriors team executive Ronald Dulatre said in a statement in an online press conference last Saturday.

“This agreement was reached following discussions with the PBA Board, Commissioner Willie Marcial, NLEX Road Warriors management, and Kiefer’s camp,” he added.

Under the agreement, the 6-foot Ravena will finish his stint for NLEX in the ongoing Philippine Cup and will only play for one season in Japan.

A corresponding fine will be meted on Ravena if when he fails to honor the pact.

The pro league also fined the Manny V. Pangilinan-owned ballclub for allowing Ravena to sign with Shiga Lakestars despite having a live three-year contract with the team and a Unified Players Contract (UPC) with the PBA which is viewed as a tripartite agreement.
