Persons affected by enhanced monsoon up by nearly 30%

THE National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported a nearly 30 percent increase in the number of individuals affected by the southwest monsoon that was enhanced by super typhoon “Goring,” typhoon “Hanna” and tropical depression “Ineng” which all have left the country.

In a report, the NDRRMC said the number of population affected by the calamity was at 239,581 families or 907,636 individuals as of yesterday, from 172,346 families or 638,967 individuals the previous day.

The affected people are from 2,285 barangays in seven regions — Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Western Visayas, Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), and National Capital Region (NCR), the NDRRMC said.

Of the affected,   931 families or 3,328 persons remain displaced — staying in 43 evacuation centers or with relatives and friends — as of yesterday, from last Wednesday’s figure of 929 families or 3,824 individuals.

Western Visayas had the highest number of persons affected with 145,171 families (537,747 individuals). As of yesterday, only seven families or 32 individuals are displaced in the region, all staying with relatives or friends.

The cost of damage to agriculture and infrastructure also rose yesterday to P1.89 billion, from the previous day’s P1.85 billion.

The NDRRMC pegged the cost of damage to agriculture at P992.43 million in five regions — Cagayan Valley (P528.62 million), Western Visayas (P356.12 million), Mimaropa (P66.38 million), Central Luzon (P38.40 million), and CAR (P2.88 million).

The cost of damage to infrastructure was placed at P905.69 million – P597 million in Ilocos, P151.65 in Cagayan Valley, P108.93 in CAR, P40.19 million in Mimaropa, and P7.91 in Calabarzon.

These are on top of 7,813 houses that were “totally” and “partially” damaged in Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Western Visayas and CAR. The NDRRMC did not provide the estimated cost of damage to houses.

The NDRRMC said P77.39 million worth of assistance, mostly family food packs, were provided to those affected in Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Western Visayas, CAR and NCR.
