THE whistleblower in alleged corruption activities in the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) who later recanted his accusations is set to appear before the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) today, Monday.
Justice Assistant Secretary and spokesperson Jose Dominic Clavano said Jeffrey Tumbado, the former executive assistant of suspended agency chairman Teofilo Guadiz III, has received his subpoena from the NBI Anti-Graft Division.
“He is set to appear before the NBI at 10 in the morning of Monday, October 16, 2023,” Clavano said, adding that Tumbado is required to present evidence of his corruption allegations even if he has recanted his accusations.
“He is required to be present. As stated in the subpoena, failure to appear may be penalized under the law,” he added.
Last Wednesday, Tumbado recanted his allegations against Guadiz, saying what he stated in a press conference were “unintentional and misguided.”
He also apologizes to Guadiz and Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista.
Bautista earlier said he would sue Tumbado for linking his name to alleged corruption in the LTFRB.
Tumbado had claimed that public utility operators pay Guadiz and other transport officials up to P5 million in return for the agency granting them franchises, special permits to operate, and additional routes.
Tumbado’s allegations led to the suspension of Guadiz by Malacanang.
