NPC sets up Visayas satellite office

The National Power Corp. (NPC) broke ground this week for the construction of its satellite office in Visayas that is expected to cater to 46 Small Power Utilities Group (SPUG) power plants in the region.

Pio Benavidez, NPC president and chief executive officer, said the office in Lahug, Cebu will help the state-run firm streamline its operations and reach more new areas to energize.

NPC currently services 55,000 households across 29 municipalities in Visayas, with 24 of its 46 power plants operating 24/7 including the two power barges stationed in Camotes Island.

“This number (of power projects) will still increase as the corporation is set to launch nine new areas in Eastern and Northern Samar,” Benavidez said.

The office, to be located on a 2,000-square-meter land leased by the provincial government of Cebu through a Usufruct Agreement, will have three storeys with a training room and equipment center. It will be finished in the fourth quarter of the year.

NPC is mandated to provide power generation and associated power delivery systems via SPUG power plants to islands and communities that are not connected to the main transmission grid.

It is also tasked to oversee watersheds and locate indigenous sources of power.
