Mobile Internet speed in the country continues to improve but fixed broadband dipped slightly in September from August, according to the Ookla Speedtest Global Index report.
The report said the download speed in September averaged at 35.03 megabits per second (mbps) from 33.7 mbps in August or a month-to-month improvement of 3.73 percent.
Fixed broadband speed dipped slightly to 71.85 mbps compared with 72.56 mbps in August.
The Philippines now ranks ranks 72nd out of 138 countries in mobile and 64th in fixed broadband out of 181 countries.
Out of 50 countries in Asia, the country’s internet speed placed 23rd for mobile and 17th for fixed broadband. In Asia-Pacific, the Philippines ranked 13th for mobile and 14th for fixed broadband out of 46 countries. In Asean, the country ranked 5th in both fixed broadband and mobile out of 10 countries.
The improvement on internet speed is largely attributed to the streamlining and speed of the issuance of local government permits which generated a significant increase in permits granted to telcos from July 2020 to August this year vis-í -vis 2019.
With this telcos are able to fast-track building infrastructure (cellular towers and fiber optic network) necessary in boosting services and connectivity.
