The public will enjoy continued improved services and faster internet connections if the telecommunication companies sustain their current rollout of more cables and towers to further expand their coverage and services, according to the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) .
At the Laging Handa public briefing,DICT undersecretary Emmanuel Rey Caintic, the country has started to enjoy faster internet speeds and the department is working with the private telecommunications companies not just to sustain but to further improve the services.
Ookla Speedtest, a global Internet speed monitoring firm, said the Philippines global rankings improved to 65th from the 80th in fixed broadband speed after recording a download speed of 58.73 megabits per second (mbps) in May — up from 49.31 mbps in April – and an upload speed of 57.40 mbps.
Ookla said the Philippines global rankings also improved to 77th from 84th spot in mobile internet speed after clocking a download speed of 31.98 mbps — from 29.12 mbps – and an upload speed of 8.74 Mbps also in May.
“That will only keep going up for as long as we telco providers continue to add more cables and towers,” Caintic said.
He said the DICT recognized the continuing challenge to provide continued connectivity and better quality of service to the people, especially in this time of COVID-19 crisis.
The DICT has committed to cooperate, engage, and work together not just with the industry players but also with the local government units and other national government agencies to ensure the continued improvement and quality internet and mobile service in the country.
