Merbau eyes more investments, completes Batangas rooftop solar

JG Summit Holdings Inc. through its renewable energy (RE) arm, Merbau Corp., is keen on pursuing more RE ventures within and outside the Gokongwei Group, after completing its 13.811 megawatts (MW) rooftop solar energy project in Batangas City.

Patrick Henry Go, Merbau president and chief executive officer, said the company is looking into a portfolio of projects in partnership with Robinsons Land Corp. for its malls and industrial warehouses, Universal Robina Corp. (URC) for its manufacturing plants and distribution channels, as well as for Cebu Pacific.

“We also plan to expand our RE portfolio to be able to deliver power to eligible end-users outside of the group in our commitment to solidify our dedication to sustainable and innovative energy solutions,” Go further said.

Merbau said the Batangas project is one of the largest solar rooftop solar installations in the country to date as it covered the rooftops of nine buildings.

Construction of the project started in August 2022 and was rolled out in two phases, with the first involving 5.8 MW and completed in December 2022 and the second phase with a capacity of 8 MW completed last April.

Merbau said the project will provide a significant portion of the energy requirements of the fully integrated petrochemical complex of JG Summit, which houses JG Summit Olefins Corp. (JGSOC) manufacturing plants and the packaging division of URC.

The project can generate an estimated energy savings of 17.8 gigawatt hours per year and reduce a projected 17,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually from both JGSOC and URC warehouses and building offices within the petrochemical complex.

Go said Upgrade Energy Philippines was tapped as engineering, procurement and construction contractor for the project.
