Red Lions clash with Blazers

0

DEFENDING champion San Beda University and College of St. Benilde face off today in the early clash of the league titans for the solo lead in 100th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

The Lions smashed the Lyceum Pirates 79-63 that launched their title defense while the Blazers grounded the Mapua Cardinals 78-65, in last Saturday’s inaugurals at the MOA Arena.

Game time is at 2:30 p.m.

Both San Beda and CSB unveiled their newest weapons in the opener with the former parading Bryan Sajonia, a recruit from Far Eastern U who fired 18 points, and the latter unleashing Allen Liwag, formerly of Emilio Aguinaldo who dropped 23 points, 18 rebounds and three blocks.

“Hirap ng sked namin, first two games mabigat agad kalaban,” said San Beda coach Yuri Escueta.

For CSB mentor Charles Tiu, it was all about defense.

“It was a good game, we started it on defense,” said Tiu referring to their come-from-behind win over Mapua.

Gab Cometa was also a bright spot for the Blazers, as he came off the bench to chip in 17 points.

Making their season debut are Perpetual Help and Jose Rizal University, both are expected to contend and fight out for a Final Four seat at 11 a.m.

Newcomers Tony Ynot, Cometa, along with Allen Liwag shone for the Blazers

Ynot, despite the victory, admitted that the Taft-based squad still has lots of things to improve on, especially team chemistry.

Alas men can only get better

A GALLANT effort a few of the world’s best players, the Alas Pilipinas men’s volleyball team offered a peak of its talent in the recent Invitationals where it faced Japanese superstar Yuji Nishida and the Osaka Bluteon of the Japan SV.League over the weekend.

The Filipino spikers put on a valiant fight in front of the home crowd as they battled the Nishida-led Bluteon in back-to-back friendly matches at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig organized by the Philippine National Volleyball Federation.

The Blueton eked out a 29-27, 25-23, 25-12 win over Alas men.

“This match is my first time with the Philippine national team. I don’t know (their) players or (their) level, I don’t know so we’ll give more focus to high level with our serve, block, defense, everything (else),” Nishida said.

“The Philippine national team’s not so many times, but sometimes good in (their) performance, every single attack (from) outside (and) middle blocker was very good, high-level (performance),” he added.

Alas coach Angiolino Frigoni was delighted with the nationals’ performance, giving positive remarks against the Bluteon in their first duel despite the outcome.

“The performance was very good for the first two sets. To play at this level, you need a lot of attention. The level of attention must always be very high,” Frigoni said. “We are not able to stay with it so long, with this attention. But I am pretty happy with what we did today, at least for us it is very important because we have to adjust the defense, the blocking, the side out. Against this level, it is very difficult. I am happy.”

The Alas Pilipinas Invitationals were part of the nationals’ build-up prior for the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship next year that the country will host.

The draw of the World Championships will be held this Saturday, Sept. 14.

Quiambao makes big impact for Archers

LA Salle star Kevin Quiambao is not the reigning UAAP MVP for nothing.

Displaying his reliability and leadership for the defending champions Green Archers, Quiambao took over in their 78-75 victory over the National University Bulldogs in their opening game in the 87th basketball tournament last Sunday night.

Quiambao, also last season’s finals MVP, finished with 22 points–none bigger than a left wing three-pointer that saved La Salle from the jaws of defeat, to go with eight rebounds and seven assists.

“I think, first of all, hindi nagki-click iyong kung ano iyong gusto namin itakbo buong game and then pinoint-out ko lang sa sarili ko na kailangan kong ‘take over mode’ na kailangan kumuha kami ng guy iyong may masasandalan sila,” Quiambao said. “So, ang ginawa ko lang is, naging glue guy lang ako, nag-lead by example ako. Iyon, good thing naman, pumasok iyong tira.

“Noong time na iyon, noong nakita kong tumama sa screen si Steve Nash [Enriquez of NU) so, may one or two seconds ako na tinignan ko iyong ring at tinignan ko kung ano iyong gagawin ng depensa. So, hindi nag-help iyong corner guy, so, tinake advantage ko na. Iyon, nalibre ako and good thing nga pumasok iyong tira,” he added.

Archers coach Topex Robinson gave Quiambao plaudits for his herocis.

“Again, that’s the beauty of having him. You know, those last few possessions of the game wherein he’s gonna make the right decision and we always tell this in our team, Kevin will win games for us, and he will lose games for us,” he said. “The fact that he had five turnovers was just evident of the freedom that he has.

“Then, iyon nga sinabi niya kanina, sisisihin ko rin naman siya kahit anong nangyari, so, he took the better route which is not only getting himself open but getting his teammates open.”

Stags, Generals zoom to fast start

SAN Sebastian College and Emilio Aguinaldo College opened their campaign in the 100th season of the NCAA on a high yesterday, outworking their foes at The Arena in San Juan.

Powered by Rafael Are, the Golden Stags turned back the Letran Knights 91-84 while the Generals scored an 87-80 victory over Arellano U.

Are had a career-high 30 points along with six rebounds, six assists and a steal to propel San Sebastian to victory while Harold Ricio and Tristan Felebrico combined for 28 markers.

Raymart Escobido also had a big hand in the win with 13 points as San Sebastian took advantage of Letran’s 24 turnovers.

“Ito, first game namin pero sabi ko nga malaki pa ang pupuntahan namin. Siguro at least magandang motivation sa players at sa mga taong sumusuporta sa amin and nagititiwala,” Stags rookie coach Arvin Bonleon said.

Letran posted a 14-point lead early in fourth 77-63 but San Sebastian battled back and grabbed the lead 82-81, 2:36 left.

Kobe Monje and James Jumao-o’s identical 16 markers proved to be not enough for Letran along with Sherick Estrada’s 13 points and Kevin Santos’ seven markers and 10 boards.

In the second game, EAC averted what could have been a huge meltdown against the Chiefs.

King Gurtiza, who took over for the Generals in the overtime period, sizzled with 18 points, four rebounds, three assists and a block while Harvey Pagsanjan flirted with a double-double of 13 markers and nine boards.

Lorenz Capulong and Maverick Vinoya each tallied a double-double performance for the Chiefs, with the former having 18 points and 13 rebounds while the latter had 13 markers and 10 boards in the losing effort.

HD Spikers keep Thai spikers winless

CIGNAL subdued Est Cola 25-23, 27-25, 25-12 for its second straight win yesterday in the PVL Invitational Conference at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.

Venezuelan import MJ Perez and the HD Spikers remained unbeaten, rising to a 2-0 start, as the veteran outside spiker fired 28 points off 23 attacks and five blocks, along with nine excellent receptions, and six digs.

Team captain Ces Molina delivered 12 markers, 12 digs and six excellent receptions and Chin Basas had eight points for Cignal.

“I think nakaka-adjust na rin iyong mga bata (Est Cola) kahit papaano dito satin and doon sa laro nila but iyon nga, sobrang makikita mo rin na (kahit) mga bata pa, sabi ko nga, two to three years from now, ibang-ibang level na maglaro iyang mga iyan,” HD Spikers coach Shaq Delos Santos said. “So, very promising iyong team na iyon.

“Kami naman, I know na talagang pagod din, talagang nag-e-effort talaga iyong buong team para makapag-perform ng maayos and I’m so happy na binibigay nila iyong best nila and thankful kasi siyempre, no injuries talaga,” he added.

The Thai-based squad is now on the brink with a 0-3 slate.

Outside hitter Warisara Seetaloed was the lone bright star for Est Cola with 17 points and 10 excellent receptions.

Lions clash with Pirates in NCAA opening

DEFENDING champion San Beda University’s resolve will be tested right away.

The Red Lions square off with the Lyceum Pirates tomorrow, Saturday, as the NCAA’s centennial cage wars get going at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.

The match is set at 2:30 p.m. after the expected glamorous opening rites at noon.

Last cage wars’ bridesmaid Mapua tackles College of St. Benilde at 5 p.m.

“Every time naman na kalaban mo iyong Lyceum kailangan ready ka. Katulad ng sabi ko, coach Gilbert (Malabanan) always prepares well,” San Beda coach Yuri Escueta said. “He coaches his team well. He prepares his team well. Isa sa mga pinaka-masipag na teams.

“Hindi lang sa NCAA and sa Pilipinas yata ang Lyceum so it’s going to be a challenge for us. Hopefully, iyong challenge na iyon maharap namin ng tama,” he added.

The Lions will have to make do without former ace Jacob Cortez, who transferred to La Salle in the UAAP, and Peter Alfaro due to graduation but will have reliable players in Yukien Andrada, Jomel Puno and finals MVP James Payosing.

San Beda will also have new additions Bryan Sajonia, brothers RC and Richi Calimag, Penny Estacio, and Bismarck Lina.

John Barba, along with John Bravo, Vincent Cunanan, Mclaude Guadana and Gyle Montano are expected to banner the Pirates’ charge.

“For me, we can expect a very exciting game. Actually, talagang pinaghandaan namin iyong San Beda, iyong first game namin, kasi you know naman, last season talaga natalo kami ng San Beda (kahit may) twice-to-beat, No. 2 kami,” Malabanan said. “So, iyon iyong kumbaga parang motivation ko sa mga players ko ngayon na lalong lalo na first game namin iyong San Beda and again, gusto namin na kumbaga makakabawi din doon sa losses namin last year so I think it’s a motivation to our team.”

Cool Smashers still the best of ‘em

CREAMLINE’S opening match loss to PLDT served as an aberration to what turned out be the team’s return to the Promised Land.

“Siyempre matamis na matamis (itong title). Siyempre kahit na wala iyong (ilang) players namin tiwala naman ako sa team namin kasi talagang nag-e-ensayo sila,” Cool Smashers coach Sherwin Meneses said.

“Like kahit nandiyan iyong mga star players namin hindi sila talaga nagpapabaya sa ensayo. Thankful ako kasi nandiyan sila Michele Gumabao, mga leader namin sa team, so thankful talaga ako dahil nandiyan sila,” he added.

Meneses spoke after his charges humbled the erstwhile unbeaten Akari Chargers 25-15, 25-23, 25-17 in their knockout battle for the PVL Reinforced Conference crown last Wednesday night,

Bernadeth Pons, named the conference and finals MVP, along with American import Erica Staunton and veteran hitter Gumabao, showed the way for Creamline as it bagged a ninth title overall despite missing aces Alyssa Valdez, Tots Carlos and Jema Galanza.

But the best is yet to come for the Cool Smashers in the Invitational tilt where they are joined by the Cignal HD Spikers and the Farm Fresh Foxies, along with foreign guest teams in reigning champion Kurashiki Ablaze of Japan and Thailand’s Est Cola.

Kurashiki zooms to hot start

0

REIGNING champion Kurashiki drubbed Farm Fresh 25-13, 25-16 25-16 yesterday for its second straight win in the PVL Invitational Conference at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig.

Middle blocker Cing Mei Low continued to sizzle for the Japanese-based club with 12 points, seven off attacks and four kill blocks while skipper Saya Taniguchi added 10 markers.

“(We had a) good performance. Nalabas ng Ablaze iyong (aming) way of volleyball,” Ablaze coach Hideo Suzuki said through an interpreter.

“Noong first set, maganda iyong performance ko. (Kapag may) hindi magandang set pero (nagagawan ng paraan) mapalo ng malakas kaya okay today,” Taniguchi added.

It was a mini reunion for Kurashiki after it faced on the other side its former deputy coach and ace player Shota Sato and Asaka Tamaru who now serve as the Foxies tactician and foreign guest player, respectively.

The Ablaze, who opened their title-retention bid last Wednesday with a 25-20, 25-18, 23-25, 25-21 triumph over Est Cola, gained the solo lead with a 2-0 mark.

Reinforced Conference’s Best Opposite Hitter Trisha Tubu and Tamaru scored nine and eight points, respectively, for Farm Fresh.

Guarded optimism for Knights

0

WHILE promising to bring its A-Game in the 100th NCAA basketball tournament, Letran is tempering expectations.

“Actually, kung titingnan mo itong 100th season, parang nasa rank sixth to 10th kami kasi nandiyan pa ang defending champion San Beda, Mapua, Lyceum, CSB, EAC at Arellano, which is coming from a 9th or 10th place finish,” new Knights coach Allen Ricardo, who replaced Rensy Bajar, said. “Nakita naman natin ang improvement ng team nila. Again, we just take it one game at a time.

“Somehow naman ako, lagi kong sinasabi ang legacy nila as a person. Hindi matatawaran kung paano sila maglaro at kung paano sila magpakamatay, iyong legacy nila kapag naglalaro sila, ma-redeem ninyo from last season. I cannot promise anything. As I have said, going into this season, rank 6th to 10th. We will play it one game at a time. Talagang malalakas kalaban naming,” he added.

Letran wound up with a woeful 2-16 slate last season under Bajar and faces San Sebastian College on Sunday at The Arena in San Juan.

A former Squires strategist, Ricardo guided the team to the top in the juniors’ meet in the 98th season.

He said the Knights will have their traditional buzz cut before they begin their bid, explaining that it’s more than just a haircut.

“Una iyong sa Friday, papagupitan ko na sila kasi we always start from the ground and stay humble no matter what. Kaya may reason ‘zero’ ang ipapagupit ko sa mga bata, para makita ang unity as a team. Ma-appreciate ng community, ma-appreciate ng mga sumusuporta,” Ricardo said. “So, binabago ko muna ang pag-uugali nila at body language nila because as a coach, iyong mga techniques maituturo naman. Pero kung hindi naman maganda attitude at body language mo, useless din ang technique.

“Kung ano ang coaching style ko sa juniors, ganoon din coaching style ko sa seniors. Ako kasi, aside from techniques, importante sa akin ang right attitude, right body language. Kasi naniniwala ako na kapag tama ginagawa mo sa buhay mo, tama iyong ugali mo, may magandang balik sa iyo palagi. Iyon lang iyong principle ko as a person.”

Letran will begin its campaign without veteran Paolo Javillonar due to a three-game suspension for playing for Converge in the pre-season and the season-ending injury of Jonathan Manalili.

Javillonar was slapped with the ban after he was listed with the PBA’s Converge FiberXers during the 39th Kadayawan Festival last July.

The Knights team captain was selected 19th overall by Converge in this year’s Draft, while Manalili has an undisclosed injury, and will undergo a medical operation mid-September, according to Ricardo.

UP quint not lacking motivation

0

AFTER runner-up finishes in the last two seasons, University of the Philippines is raring to finally hit paydirt when the 87th UAAP basketball tournament comes off the wraps this Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

“Masakit siya, dalawang runner-up, dalawang Game 3 (finals) na natalo kami sa huli,” prized Fighting Maroons guard Harold Alarcon said yesterday during the new season’s launch at the Novotel Manila Araneta City.

“Isang motivation sa akin kasi alam mo iyon, iyong feeling, iyong parang masakit (kasi) nandiyan pa rin kaya siguro gigil kami makuha ngayon,” he added.

UP failed to retain its title and fell to Ateneo in the 85th season while the squad lost last season to La Salle–both in winner-take-all Game 3s.

The 6-foot-1 Alarcon tempered expectations for the Maroons, saying: “Sinasabi lang namin sa bawat isa no expectations at every game iisipin lang na ibigay lang iyong best namin.”

The Katipunan-based crew’s preparations included overseas training camps in Serbia, South Korea and recently in Taiwan.

Blue chip transferees Gani Stevens and Fil-Am big man Quentin Millora-Brown are expected to boost the Maroons’ drive.

“This past few weeks, iyong preparation namin outside the country malaking tulong and iyon nga, iyong pagkawala ng ibang players (like) sina CJ (Cansino), sina Malick (Diouf) may pumalit naman,” Alarcon said.

“Iyong pumapalit naman kay CJ halos lahat naman parang kayang mag-step up sa team,” added Alarcon, who has been tasked, along with JD Cagulangan, Janjan Felicilda, Terrence Fortea, Gerry Abadiano and Reyland Torres, to lead UP.

The Maroons take on the Blue Eagles in an early “Battle of Katipunan” on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

“Masasabi ko ready kami sa Saturday na game. Iyong preparation namin parang nandiyan na kahit character, kahit sa team nandiyan,” Alarcon said.
