At the MOA signing ceremony were from left, Georgina Yang, DepEd Assistant Secretary; Sharon Santiago, Chalkboard marketing director; Leandro Añonuevo, Chalkboard director of Business Development and Partnerships; Sonny Angara, DepEd Secretary; Kristine Brown, Chalkboard chief executive officer; and Albert Tablan, Chalkboard chief operating officer.

In a landmark initiative aimed at enhancing the quality of education in the country, the Department of Education (DepEd) has partnered with Chalkboard, a leading provider of tutoring services, to launch the Academic Remediation, Acceleration, and Livelihood (ARAL) Program. This program seeks to address the pressing challenges in literacy and numeracy faced by Filipino students, particularly in public schools.

The Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed on October 14 by DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara and Chalkboard CEO Kristine E. Brown, bringing together the strengths of both the public and private sectors to promote improved educational outcomes for K-10 learners.

This partnership aligns with the government’s mandate to provide accessible, quality education as outlined in Republic Act 8525, otherwise known as the “Adopt-A-School Act of 1998,” which encourages private sector involvement in improving public education.

At the heart of the ARAL Program lies Chalkboard’s evidence-based curriculum grounded in the latest educational research and best practices.

The ARAL Program employs a comprehensive, evidence-based strategy to address learning deficits exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Developed by Chalkboard, the program offers up to 25 days of targeted tutoring over six weeks, delivered through both in-person and digital platforms.

The ARAL Program will be funded through partnerships with private sponsors, local government units, and other supporting entities.

This collaboration between DepEd and Chalkboard is seen as a model for future public-private partnerships in education with an eye at bridging current learning gaps.

Avon’s #FeelYourself movement empowers

0

Avon, a proud and leading advocate for women’s health and well-being, is taking bold strides this October with the launch of its #FeelYourself movement, inspiring Filipinas to lead the charge in the fight against breast cancer.

Breast cancer remains the most commonly occurring cancer in women worldwide. Avon is strengthening its commitment to promoting early detection, awareness, and education.

The latest Avon Boob Census, a comprehensive study conducted by the global beauty brand every year, reveals that of 7,000 women across seven countries, including the Philippines, only 45% of women feel confident identifying signs of breast cancer–down from 47% in 2023. Just 12% of women are learning breast self-checks from family, a decrease from 20% last year.

For over 30 years, Avon has stood by women in their journey to breast health awareness, encouraging them to take control of their health. Launching their breast cancer awareness month campaign, the #FeelYourself movement encourages women to prioritize their well-being and includes breast self-checks in their self-care routine as self-care that could save their lives.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Avon is calling on all to unite, take action, and empower each other to take charge of their breast health through a series of uplifting, educational, and impactful events.

The centerpiece in Avon’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month activities is the Feel Yourself Pink Parade–a powerful and inspiring celebration of community, courage, and hope.

Taking place on October 20, Sunday, at Emerald Avenue, Ortigas City, the event is set to be a vibrant show of solidarity for breast cancer awareness, with support and help from Avon ambassadors and celebrities.

Star Magic partners with int’l acting school

Sightlines’ Actors Space officials and Direk Lauren Dyogi of Star Magic with DJ AI DELA CRUZ

Sightlines’ Actors Space and Star Magic officially announced their partnership with a contract signing event last October 16 at Coffee Project in Wil Tower Mall, Quezon City. While they have collaborated for several months, this event marked the formal launch of their partnership.

Star Magic workshops have been instrumental in shaping many of today’s top artists, to name a few: Kathryn Bernardo, Kim Chiu, Belle Mariano, Charlie Dizon, and  Arjo Atayde, who have brought home international recognition

In line with Star Magic’s commitment to enhance the opportunities for its artists and aspiring talents to train, connect, create, and grow, the premier talent management arm has officially partnered with an international acting school renowned for its award-winning Meisner Core Program.

This collaboration brings the Meisner Technique of Acting to the forefront, offering a creative home for actors to develop their craft.

The Meisner technique focuses on ‘living truthfully under imaginary circumstances’ through emotional preparation, repetition exercises, and improvisation. This widely respected approach has become an industry standard and is practiced by A-list Hollywood actors such as Jack Nicholson, Tom Cruise, Sandra Bullock, Jim Carrey, and Timothée Chalamet. Some of the Star Magic artists who also underwent the Meisner workshop program include Race Matias, Mutya Orquia, Harvey Bautista, and JM De Guzman.

Present at the official contract signing were Sightlines’ founder and artistic director, Alecsx Lorica, along with operations director, Marcel David. Also present from their team were business partnerships director Mikel Godinez, business and community development director Dads Valencia, and marketing director Isabelle Prado.

“I’ve been exposed to other techniques also, which I do love. But what’s wonderful about Meisner, I think, is that it’s applicable regardless of the medium. Kasi we’ve had students who are theater actors, who are film actors, who are voice actors… because it’s focused on building foundational skills, you can really use it regardless of the medium,” Alecsx shared.

“The great thing about our class, yung fundamentals, is that we actually treat it as an open class. Even our students right now, kahit nage-explore na sila or nag-intermediate na, bumabalik at bumabalik pa rin sila sa foundational – sa fundamentals class. There’s always something new to learn,” Marcel said.

The signing was also attended by Star Magic’s head of Finance, Ed Capulong, and ABS-CBN TV Production and Star Magic head Direk Laurenti Dyogi.

“We’re looking forward to a long partnership… Timing siya to the time we are exploring as well. There are no coincidences,” Direk Lauren said.

Direk Lauren added: “We welcome everybody who would like to explore playing roles, being more creative, having fun, and wanting to be in the industry. Somehow, maybe this might be a doorway for you to get into the industry.”

The specialized masterclass programs will be led by some of the industry’s top experts and added to the course lineup in 2025.

Star Magic will continue to offer its standard workshops, including Kids Acting Workshops, Voice Workshops, and Dance Workshops.

Star Magic Workshops also announced new courses featuring the renowned Meisner Technique to be facilitated by designated Meisner instructors from Sightlines Actors’ Space, including Meisner Acting Workshops for Teens, Meisner Acting Workshops for Adults, and a Meisner Masterclass this November, and registration opens this October 19.

Exciting times lie ahead for future workshoppers with this new partnership, as Star Magic remains dedicated to shaping artists to reach their full potential in front of the camera.
