Mathew Sygal So

WE had the privilege of meeting 19-year-old Mathew Sygal So from Marikina City, who is one of the 55 contestants for Mister International Philippines 2023.

Mathew met members of media at Bulbasaur Secret Garden in Marikina City last weekend where he spoke about his journey to the ongoing pageant and his plans for the future.

Currently, Mathew is an undergraduate junior student of Ateneo de Manila University taking up BS Management Engineering. For him, his education comes first and foremost.

“As I aspire to be a business consultant and entrepreneur someday, I take my academics seriously and assume leadership roles that can boost my skills towards it,” said the 5-foot-10 looker in a voice that is all at once confidently loud and clear and adamant.

Mathew has taken up leadership roles such as project manager of the Ateneo Challenge for Transformational Sustainability (ACTS) and junior associate for externals within the previous year.

He is also part of AIESEC, an esteemed organization that lives out core competencies of youth leadership and cultural understanding,

Founded in 1948, AIESEC, which stands for the French name “Association Internationale des í‰tudiants en Sciences í‰conomiques et Commerciales“ (in English: International Association of Students in Economics and Commercial Sciences) is a global platform for young people to develop their leadership potential through practical experiences of many kinds, including internships, volunteering opportunities, and more.

Looking back at his high school tenure, he was able to receive the Xavier School Magis Award and was a lead in multiple events.

On the side, Mathew serves the Lord by volunteering in the Xavier Days with the Lord, a community that fosters brotherhood and upholds the values of Christianity. He also tries to keep an active lifestyle by playing football and badminton, among other sports.

Beyond this, he is an ambassador for several institutions and companies like National Counsel on Disability Affairs (NCDA), Slimmer’s World Ali Mall, C-Point, and Konzept Shoes.

In fact, Mathew was joined by the victorious Philippine chess team, together with playing coach James Infiesto, who competed at the ASEAN Para Games 2023 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and hauled 13 golds, 7 silvers and 15 bronze medals to become the biggest contributor from a single sport to the total harvest of 34-33-50 medals of the Philippines, its most successful stint ever in the biennial games.

NCDA’s executive director Joniro “Don” F. Fradejas and other officials also attended the press con to support So’s journey to the international pageant.

With his heartthrob looks, Mathew is also considering a career in showbiz, particularly hosting, his role model being fellow Atenean and sought-after host Robi Domingo.

A young man of character, Mathew is definitely someone to look out for at the Mister International Philippines 2023 grand finale at the Newport Performing Arts Theater on June 28, 2023.

Patricia Javier and son Robert Douglas Walcher IV

ROBERT Douglas Walcher IV, the 16-year-old son of actress-beauty queen Patricia Javier and American chiropractor Dr. Rob Walcher, was crowned as Mister Teen International 2023 in an international competition held in Bangkok, Thailand last June 1.

A home school Grade 10 student who aspires to be a chiropractor like his dad, Robert, who stands 5’10”, also took home several special awards, namely: Mister Charming, Best Teen Smile, Mister Sash Factor and Best National Costume (second prize).

The last award is for the elaborate ensemble called Golden Eagle Warrior that combines Power and Strength, inspired by the Philippine Eagle and Lapu-lapu and created by Don Cristobal who also did Walcher’s formal wear and sportswear.

“I’m so happy and to have won the competition. It was my way of giving back to God for having blessed me with a loving and supportive family.”

Right after arriving from Bangkok, Robert   joined his mom in an outreach program of the Camillian Sisters Antipolo.

As Mister Teen International, Robert will also be traveling in Thailand and Vietnam for activities related to his reign.

Walcher’s victory is especially meaningful for Patricia who calls herself as Robert’s “mommyger,” after she herself awarded her son’s crown and sash together with her mom Jean Canlapan as per the Bangkok’s event format requiring the parent or guardian to be the presenter of the award themselves.

“I am so happy and so proud my son won not only for himself but for the Philippines!” said Patricia, who was crowned as the first ever Noble Queen of the Universe in 2019.

Last Wednesday, Robert was feted with a victory luncheon party at Windmills and Rainforest in Quezon City by his parents.

Also present to congratulate Robert were Ameer Gamama and Norman Tinio, president and communications director of Mister International Philippines, respectively. The organization is the license holder for Mister Teen International and sent Robert to the pageant in Bangkok.

Robert’s fellow winners from Team Philippines in Bangkok – Prince Teen Asia Pacific 2023 Normandy Montaño II and Miss Teen International Ambassador 2023 Eunice Dacumos – who are both from Silang, Cavite, also graced the event.

Fast rising teen-aged singer-composer Kaye Sicatt and her mom Ritchell also attended, with Kaye singing two songs including her original “I’d Tell You I Love You” from the music video that co-starred Robert, produced by Vehnee Saturno Music and directed by no less than Patricia Javier.

Doc Rob, meanwhile, thanked members of the press who supported his son in his pageant journey and raffled off products from The Doc Rob Store.

“Being a chiropractor for over 20 years, firstly I wanted to help you sleep properly aligned and secondly give you a pillow so comfortable (their flagship product Doc Rob Wellness Pillow) you would continue to use it,” said the 6’3 chiropractor who was also a former model and actor who competed and won medals and became a finalist at WCOPA in Long Beach, California back in 2009.

Welcome home Anie; best wishes Shannon

Shannon Robinson, Cory Quirino and Annie Uson Chen

IT was a twin celebration as Mutya ng Pilipinas (MNP) shared their victory as well as their hope for another crown at a press conference at CWC Interiors, BGC last Wednesday.

Two Mutya queens shared the spotlight – newly crowned Miss Chinese World 2023 Anie Uson Chen and Mumbai-bound Miss Environment International Philippines 2023 Shannon Mababangloob Robinson.

Anie Uson, the first Filipina to win the coveted Miss Chinese World title at the recently concluded competition in Kuala Lumpur, shared  that “up to this moment, I’m still in Cloud 9!”

Born in Labrador, Pangasinan, Anie studied at the Bayanihan Institute in Tarlac and St. Louis University in Baguio. She is a licensed architect who models part time.

Anie’s Chinese dad is originally from Guangzhou and Fujian, China.

Anie thanked her Mutya ng Pilipinas family, headed by its president Cory Quirino and chairman Fred Yuson, who celebrated her victory with a sumptuous buffet with guests including fellow Mutya queens: Iona Gibbs, Celyn Bautista, Justine Teng and Robinson.

The Miss Chinese World pageant, only on its fifth edition since its initial staging in 2005, is focused on promoting Chinese culture and traditions among countries whose women are of Chinese descent.

Meanwhile, a highly-motivated Shannon Robinson, who was Miss Luzon in the recently- concluded 52nd edition of MNP, will represent the Philippines in Miss Environment International in Mumbai, India.

This 28-year-old, 5-foot-10 daughter of DJ legend John Robinson (of the fab disco scene in the ‘80s) and former Mutya ng Pilipinas runner-up Raquel Mababangloob, is set to leave for India tomorrow.

Two months ago, Rushikesh Miradjkar, owner of the Mumbai-based pageant, flew in to Manila to witness Shannon’s proclamation as Mutya ng Pilipinas Environment International.

“I am loving my journey and has been training seriously in all aspects of the competition. I am also carrying this opportunity for my mom,” said Shannon.

Shannon’s mom, Rax Robinson, was 1989 Mutya ng Pilipinas first runner-up.

The Miss Environment International grand coronation will be on June 15 in Mumbai, India.

Shannon was chosen as the country’s representative because of her passionate advocacy against pollution of the oceans and marine life due to oil spills and other major issues.

In addition to the twin events, Chairman Fred Yuson’s weeklong birthday bash was also celebrated with DJ Robinson and Peppermint Band as performers.

PALAWAN’S Angelica Lopez and Bataan’s Annalena Valencia Lakrini bested this year’s field of 40 contestants to emerge as winners of the 59th grand coronation night of Binibining Pilipinas held at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Sunday.

Lopez, a 22-year-old, 5-foot-7 second year Psychology student from Palawan State University in Puerto Princesa, bagged the Binibining Pilipinas International 2023 title succeeding Nicole Borromeo, who has yet to compete for the 61st Miss International in Tokyo this October.

The reigning Miss International Jasmin Selberg from Germany graced the event and crowned Lopez aside from sitting in the panel of judges.

Lopez will compete for the 62nd edition of Miss International next year.

Furing the q&a round of the top 11 finalists, Lopez, who was also a top 16 finalist at last year’s Miss Universe Philippines pageant, was asked: “What makes you a Binibini who walks the talk and who is beyond mere self-promotion?”

Her answer: “I stand here tonight because it is my mother that instilled in me the values and morals that I am using to be the woman that I am now today — a woman who has the strength, courage, and tenacity. The strength to decide for herself, what she wants, really works hard to achieve it, to have the courage to face any obstacles in life and tenacity to hold onto her wisdom of choice. I believe it is always a dream come true to be here. That is why I am a Binibini that I’ve always been meant to be.”

Lakrini, 25, the tallest contestant at almost 5’11”, is a half German nutritional scientist from Stuttgart who represented her mother’s home province of Bataan.

Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach, who is Anna’s role model, also hails from the same German city.

Anna also won the Best in Swimsuit and Miss Jag Denim Jeans titles.

When asked “In what ways is a beauty pageant candidate aiming for a crown similar to a politician running for an electoral post?,” Anna replied: “As someone who’s joining for the second time, I know that a beauty pageant has a platform on which we can talk about causes which are dear to our heart. My cause that is dear to my heart is nutrition. As a nutrition scientist…I know that in advocating with this platform from Binibining Pilipinas, we can inspire so many people. A politician can inspire a whole community, and so can we.

The first runner-up was licensed pharmacist Katrina Anne Johnson, 25, from Davao del Sur, while the second runner-up was former PBB Season 8 Housemate Atasha Reign Parani, 19, from General Trias, Cavite.

The star-studded pageant was hosted by Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray, Miss Grand International 2016 first runner-up Nicole Cordoves and Miss Universe Philippines 2014 Mary Jean Lastimosa.

The board of judges, chaired by Manila Mayor Dr. Honey Lacuna-Pangan, also included award-winning actors Dolly de Leon and Piolo Pascual, Olympian Hidilyn Diaz, social media influencer Small Laude, presidential son William Vincent Marcos, SB19 member Josh Cullen, Tatler editor-in-chief Anton San Diego, restauranteur Peter Zwiener and Miss Selberg.

Gianna Llanes considers Binibining Pilipinas 2023 as her valedictory

FOR beauty queen, court side reporter and artist Gianna Margarita Llanes, Binibining Pilipinas 2023, where she is currently candidate no. 5, will be her valedictory in her long pageant journey.

The 27-year-old, 5’5″ Communications graduate of Ateneo de Manila University and currently pursuing her masters at Harvard University, was crowned as Miss Philippines Water 2020 at the advocacy-driven pageant’s first of two virtual finales.

Before that, she also joined Miss World Philippines 2018 and Miss Mandaluyong 2019 where she placed first runner-up.

Last year, she was appointed to represent the Philippines at the supposed inaugural Miss Glamour International, but the contest ended in a fiasco that forced Gianna to go to Los Angeles and subsequently, to Canada, where she grew up.

Born in San Juan, Metro Manila to business executive Jovy Llanes and psychologist Ria Macapagal Salgado, Gianna was six years old when she and her family moved to Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. After a few years, the family moved back to the Philippines.

After graduating from Faith Academy in Cainta, Rizal, Gianna entered Ateneo de Manila University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Communications.

In 2014, she won the MYX VJ Search and served as a courtside reporter for the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 77, the 2014-2015 UAAP athletic year.

Gianna may well be in her comfort zone joining pageants and performing in front of the camera. Perhaps unknown to most fans, Gianna’s great grandmother

was Purita dela Rosa Macapagal, President Diosdado Macapagal’s first wife and sister of the famous De La Rosa brothers Jaime and Rogelio. A great beauty during her time, Purita also acted in zarzuelas and later in movies along with her brothers. She was also the Reina Elena of her hometown, Lubao, Pampanga.

Purita’s daughter and Gianna’s grandmother Cielo Macapagal Salgado was crowned as Teenage Queen of the Philippines in 1958.

Gianna took on her sporty side from her grandfather Gene Salgado, who was once a Letran cager and an alternate in the national team.

Gianna describes her pageant journey (since 2018) as “a rollercoaster ride of experiences and emotions, filled with challenges and victories as well.”

“On my final national pageant which is Binibining Pilipinas, I hope to be able to muster all the experiences where I have learned and where I had the opportunities to grow, not only as a beauty queen but as a person. I hope to be able to display that and all that I am now on coronation night.”

The 59th Binibining Pilipinas will hold its finals at the Araneta Coliseum on May 28.

MICHELLE Marquez Dee, 28, representing Makati City, was crowned as Miss Universe Philippines 2023, besting a field of 38 contestants in glittering ceremonies held at SM MOA Arena Saturday night.

Michelle, the 5-foot-9 daughter of actress and former Miss International Melanie Marquez, was crowned by her predecessor Celeste Cortesi who beat her to the coveted crown at last year’s edition where she was named Miss Universe Philippines Tourism, the equivalent of first runner-up.

As the new titleholder, Michelle earned the right to represent the Philippines at the 72nd edition of Miss Universe to be held in El Salvador in central America later this year.

During the first round of the final question-and-answer portion for the five finalists, Rep. Sam Verzosa asked Dee: “Income and inequality are still high in the Philippines. The gap between the rich and the poor remains. How do we close that gap?”

Dee replied: “I think, first, we have to recognize what we have and the privileges such as food, education, and homes. I think the best way to address this is really through education because education holds no status quo. And every Filipino child has the right to an education, not just any education but quality education. Because I believe if the government can provide this to every Filipino child, then we can not only elevate their quality of life, but we can empower them as well.”

For the second and final round of q&a, the five finalists were each asked the same question: “Recently, the Department of Tourism has adopted a new branding campaign ‘We give the world our best.’ For you, what is the best that we can offer to the rest of the world? Why do you consider it so?”

Michelle’s answer: “The Philippines is home to beautiful natural resources, from the beaches to the mountains. But I firmly believe that the best natural resource that the Philippines has is us Filipinos. We are the true heart and soul of the Philippines with the way we are hospitable, with the warm smiles. And we are the reason why the world keeps coming back for more. No matter where the universe takes me, I’ll always be proud to call the Philippines my home. And no matter what happens, I will always be proud to call myself Pinoy.”

Aside from the coveted title, Michelle was also awarded the Best in Evening Gown award, the same special title she won last year.

Michelle’s mom Melanie and siblings were present at the MOA Arena to cheer nad support her.

The first runner-up was Christine Opiaza of Zambales; while Angelique Manto from Pampanga was second runner-up.

In a brief program held during the after party at Cove Manila of Okada Manila early Sunday morning, May 14, Pauline Amelinckx, of Bohol, was crowned as Miss Supranational Philippines 2023 and Krishnah Gravidez from Baguio as Miss Charm Philippines 2024.

Other special winners presented during the finals were: Gravidez, Best In Swimsuit; Jannarie Zarzoso of Agusan del Norte, Face of Social Media; and Shayne Maquiran of Capiz, Miss Congeniality.

In GMA where she is a Sparkle Artist, she has starred in a couple of Kapuso shows such as “Love You Two,” “One of the Baes,” “Agimat ng Agila,” and “I Left My Heart In Sorsogon.”

Like Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray, Michelle also previously held the title of Miss World Philippines 2019 and made it as a top 12 finalist at the 69th Miss World Pageant in London in 2019.

Special guests at the finale were reigning Miss Universe R’Bonney Gabriel, the first Filipino-American beauty queen to win as Miss Universe; and Miss Universe 1973 Margie Moran Floirendo who both sat in the panel of judges; and Miss Universe 2019 Zozibini Tunzi who co-hosted a segment of the show.

YLLANA Marie Aduana, 24, a licensed medical laboratory scientist from Siniloan, Laguna, was crowned as Miss Philippines Earth 2023, topping the field of 28 contestants from all over the country and several Filipino communities abroad at the 23rd Miss Philippines Earth finals held at the Toledo City Sports Center in Toledo, Cebu. She was crowned by Jenny Ramp, last year’s winner.

The 5’7″ Aduana impressed the judges with her answers, sealing her victory to earn her the right to represent the country at the 23rd Miss Earth to be held in Vietnam at the end of the year.

Yana also wore an evening gown made of 5,000 safety pins which she explained in her social media accounts: “Like a safety pin, we hold critical things together. And as women, we hold the Earth together.”

The exquisitely crafted dress was made by Ken Batino.

During the hashtag round, Yana picked #safety, which she translated as:

“Safety plays a very salient role in our lives. We have to always be secured, not only safe but also in terms of water security and food security because as Miss Philippines Earth, I know that I am a hardworking person and I can always incorporate this in order for us to achieve safety at all costs and protect Mother Earth the way she protects us all with all safety.”

Aduana also impressed the judges and audience when she answered the final question:

“What do you think people in the future would say about your generation?”
She replied: “I would definitely say that our generation, although misconstrued as very ardent, I would have to say that we use our voice for a reason and that we always speak up for the things that we know are right and for the things that we know we deserve, that is why we are very ardent about it.

“That is why I’m also conducting colloquiums on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and their interconnectedness to nature in hopes to precipitate people’s eco consciousness because our future is the linebackers and the pioneers of environmental amelioration, and we should always take advantage of it at all costs.”

On top of her discussions on sustainability, Aduana is also the president of the non-profit organization Edukasyon for Every Juan, which she co-founded with her sister and where they promote Earth Education.

Crowned as Aduana’s elemental court were: Kerri Reilly of Mangatarem, Pangasinan, Miss Philippines Air; Jemimah Joy Zabala of Puerto Princesa City, Miss Philippines Water; Sha’uri Livori of the Filipino community of Melbourne, Australia, Miss Philippines Fire; and Athena Auxillo of Toledo City, Miss Philippines Eco Tourism.
