Battle royale

A battle royale is looming at the upcoming Miss Universe Philippines 2024 competition as several former Binibining Pilipinas titlists have officially been announced to join the star-studded line-up of delegates who will contest the coveted crown and the right to represent the country at the 73rd Miss Universe Competition in Mexico later this year.

With the removal of the maximum age limit for the official delegates starting with the 72nd edition of Miss Universe, many aspirants, including previous titleholders in Binibining Pilipinas who have won other than the Miss Universe crown, have been given another chance to take a crack at the coveted title and the honor to foray her personal advocacy on a bigger platform.

Let’s take a look at three former Binibining Pilipinas winners, all international pageant veterans as well, who are set to bring the national competition to a more intense level.

Kris Tiffany Janson, 34, was crowned as Miss Universe Philippines – Cebu 2024 after topping the field of 20 finalists at the regional finals held at Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino last February 3.

A 5-foot-9 finance analyst who represented Cebu City North, Kris was previously crowned as Binibining Pilipinas Intercontinental at the national pageant at the Big Dome in 2014, and went on to represent Philippines at Miss Intercontinental 2014 where she placed second runner-up.

Meanwhile, Christi Lynn McGarry, 33, was appointed as Miss Universe Philippines -Taguig 2024 at the sashing ceremony held last Wednesday.

The 5-foot-11, Filipino-American beauty queen is originally from New Jersey. She is  currently based in Taguig.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in Marketing and Advertising from the Joseph I. Lubin School of Business of Pace University in New York, USA.

Christi is the only delegate to represent the Philippines at Miss Intercontinental twice. She initially competed at the international tilt in 2010 in her capacity as Mutya ng Pilipinas winner. As Binibining Pilipinas in 2015, she competed again and placed first runner-up.

Another prominent Binibining Pilipinas queen is Ma. Ahtisa Manalo, 26, from Candelaria, Quezon who was appointed as Miss Universe Philippines – Quezon Province 2024.

The 5-foot-8 beauty queen with Finnish, Swedish and Spanish lineage was previously crowned as Binibining Pilipinas International 2018 and represented our country at Miss International 2018 where she placed as first runner-up.

Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray has expressed her best wishes for the current journey of Ahtisa, her batchmate at Binibining Pilipinas 2018.

This early, pageant fanatics have placed their bets on these three “Binibinis” as well as other Binibining Pilipinas alumni who have also been officially appointed to join Miss Universe Philippines 2024.

Netizens have dubbed the upcoming Miss Universe Philippines as a “bardagulan” of sorts, referring to the slang term used for disputes on social media utilizing hate speech.

We certainly do not hope that to escalate, but rather a happy, healthy competition at Miss Universe Philippines 2024 sometime in May.
