CAN San Miguel Beer go all the way this time? There was no stopping the Beermen yesterday.
SMB continued its winning ways in the PBA 3×3 Season 3 as it opened its bid in Leg 2 with back-to-back rousing victories yesterday at the Ayala Mall Circuit in Makati.
With veteran big man Ken Bono showing the way, the Beermen whipped Northport 21-9 and nipped Pioneer 21-18 to wrest the lead in Pool B with a 2-0 record.
The victories put SMB in strong contention of advancing in today’s knockout stage at the same venue.
The Beermen reached the quarterfinals of Leg 1 last week, where they pulled major upsets by pulling the rug from under fancied grand slam winner TNT and second seed Cavitex to advance to the finals.
SMB, however, fell short of winning the crown and the P100,000 prize money, losing to Ginebra in overtime 17-19.
Meralco brought the Kings crashing back to earth with a 21-14 win, seven days after Ginebra won it all in the opening conference of the fledgling pro 3×3 meet.
But the Bolts couldn’t sustain their momentum, losing their next game against the Triple Giga 10-15 finish their Pool A campaign with an even 1-1 card.
The race for quarterfinal berths in Pool C is too tough to call as all four teams in Cavitex, Terrafirma, Blackwater, and Purefoods carried similar 1-1 records at press time.
The Razor Sharp opened the Leg 2 competition with a 22-16 beating of Terrafirma but fell to Cavitex 15-20.
The Braves absorbed a 17-20 loss to Purefoods, only for the Titans to go down against the Dyip 16-21.
